Much has been written about the subject of hair transplants in the past, but micro hair pigmentation remained under the radar for a long time.

However, it is a less invasive treatment and one that is also suitable for those who are not eligible for hair transplants.

Hair transplants are intense procedures and Bart Verbeeck, founder of Prohairclinic in Heist-op-den-Berg, can speak about this.

After a not so successful and very invasive hair transplant using the FUT hair transplant method 25 years ago, he came into contact with the more delicate FUE method, which he then decided to offer as one of the first in Belgium in his clinic.

There, during a consultation with a client, he learned about micro hair pigmentation or hair tattoo.

“His short-shaved'head' was so believable that I didn't realize at first that it was a hair tattoo.

Not much later we started with micro hair pigmentation in the clinic and in recent years we have fully focused on that treatment and work with full-time specialists ," says Bart Verbeeck.

As the name hair tattoo - which according to Verbeeck is mainly used in the Netherlands - suggests, micro hair pigmentation involves the creation of tiny dots tattooed on the scalp to imitate hair stubble.

“There is a big difference between, let's say, 'classic' tattoos and the tattoo technique that we use.

For example, the needle thickness is much smaller – 0.15 millimeters to be precise – and the range of pigments is not only more limited, but also specially developed.”

Finally, there's a big difference in the depth of the pigmentation needle. With a regular tattoo, the ink is placed about 2 to 3 millimeters below the skin's surface to allow for coloration, while with micro hair pigmentation, you aim for 0.5 millimeters to prevent bleeding.

To be clear, you do not want to have a hair tattoo done by a normal tattoo artist, but by an experienced micro hair pigmentation specialist.”

Who is this baldness solution suitable for?

According to Verbeeck, hair tattoos are for people with different hair situations, but there is one target group in particular that often opts for this treatment.

“Approximately 80% of our clients are men who are completely or advanced bald and therefore not eligible for a hair transplant, or men who have had a failed hair transplant.

For them, shaving it all off is often the only option, and a hair tattoo is a good solution. Incidentally, many of the people who come to us are referred by hair transplant specialists like Dr. Feriduni or Dr. Bissanga .

Other forms of hair loss are also eligible. The remaining 20% of our clients are women or men with what I would call 'medium hair loss' and are looking for more optical density. Their hair thins and becomes slightly translucent. In that case, micro hair pigmentation can create an optical illusion by concealing the scalp.

Apart from the clearly visible physical result after the treatment, Bart Verbeeck also believes that the mental impact of hair pigmentation is enormous.

Read our customer testimonials to get a better idea of the impact of renewed self-confidence.

Just like with a hair transplant, clients suddenly feel much more confident after hair pigmentation. It's truly astonishing how quickly and dramatically people change. Of course, you don't have to do anything about your baldness, but if it's making you feel insecure, hair pigmentation is a relatively accessible and non-surgical way to address it.

How does micro hair pigmentation work?

After an initial contact , during which the client usually sends some photos , a personal consultation takes place to determine whether that person is indeed eligible for the treatment.

For example, we don't do hair tattoos on clients whose hair is too light gray or blond—the ink colors generally range from light brown to black. Especially when combined with fair skin, the result is either invisible or too contrasting for people with too light hair.

If the client is eligible for micro hair pigmentation, three separate sessions of three to four hours are scheduled to gradually build up the final result. The final result is achieved after approximately four weeks.

“Unlike a hair transplant, where you are limited by the number of hair follicles available, there is no limit to the number of 'hairs' we can place.
For a full head of hair you need about 20,000 to 30,000 hair tips.”

“Because of that large number and because the pigments increase in intensity in the first week to two weeks after placement, we choose to build up the final result in three layers, with two weeks between each session.

Adding extra 'hairs' is always an option, but removing the dots with a laser because there are too many is a different and more painful story.”

All in all, micro hair pigmentation treatment is a lot simpler and less invasive than a hair transplant, it is a complete solution for baldness.

It is not a surgical procedure, there is no recovery process.

The full result is visible after one month and the only discomfort you will experience, according to Verbeeck, is a slightly irritated feeling during the first 24 hours after the treatment.

How do you care for your new 'hairstyle' and how much does it cost?

Although micro hair pigmentation is a long-term solution, the results are not permanent.

Customers can therefore choose to let the hair tattoo fade or can schedule a touch-up every few years.

Our skin is constantly renewing itself, so the pigments rise higher and fade gradually, especially because the tattoo is placed so shallowly. Moreover, the ink breaks down nunder the influence of the sun.

So, most clients return after three years for a touch-up (expect a treatment time of about 2 hours), but depending on how you treat your scalp, that timeframe can vary quite a bit.

Although a specific treatment of the scalp after micro hair pigmentation is not necessary, good sun protection can prolong the life of the

hair tattoo will improve greatly.

For bald heads, Verbeeck also recommends Zero Shine 2.0 (with or without SPF) to conceal the scalp's natural shine for a more realistic hair tattoo result.

And because the price tag also matters, we of course also inquired about the estimated price of a full treatment.

According to Verbeeck, you can expect to pay an average of €1,950 for the three tattoo sessions and €200 to €400 per touch-up, although the price varies depending on the exact extent of the procedure.
